I think that Apple is going to cling to FireWire until they have either Light Peak or USB 3 to replace it.

My guess is Light Peak going to be pretty close to what an optical version of FW6400 would be.

WIth consumer camcorders moving to hard drive/usb and solid state SDHC cards, that market will diminish. By the time that transition is complete on consumer models, the next format will be out.

NO! Firewire Target Disk Mode is absolutely critical for routine maintenance and all my external hard drives are firewire.

So, we are in agreement that firewire is only around for

1. Camcorders
2. Until the next big thing replaces it.

Firewire is very popular for pro video and pro audio.

There is no substitute for Firewire 800 for these uses.
