mattress options for smaller houses and door frames
#1
house: smaller Victorian with doors that will not accommodate a king sized mattress without bending. and bending is bad.

I'm aiming for a spring mattress and not memory foam, as I require a really firm mattress (even the "pillow top" versions will not suffice in the firmness category).

has anyone encountered a similar conundrum?

Yes. You can put two twin mattresses on a king frame. They make adapters called "bridges" to cover the split in the middle.

ah, thanks, I'll look into that remedy.

I wonder if that "bridge" can tie the two mattresses together tightly enough for kids who like to jump on the bed...

Therein lies the adventure...

3/4 inch thick piece of plywood between box spring and mattress will deter jumping and increase firmness by a wide margin.

:-)

(if the box frames have wooden bottoms a piece of plywood and screw works to keep them from seperating, too.)

There are other types of foam that don't have memory, in varying degrees of firmness from soft to nearly rigid. Check at upholstery shops.

Smaller house and surrounding would make some things look even larger.

(Oh yeah, ooh)
Mr. Big Stuff
Who do you think you are
Mr. Big Stuff
You're never gonna get my love

Now because you wear all those fancy clothes (oh yeah)
And have a big fine car, oh yes you do now
Do you think I can afford to give you my love (oh yeah)
You think you're higher than every star above

Mr. Big Stuff
Who do you think you are
Mr. Big Stuff
You're never gonna get my love

Now I know all the girls I've seen you with
I know you broke their hearts one after another now, bit by bit
You made 'em cry, many poor girls cry
When they try to keep you happy, they just try to keep you satisfied

Mr. Big Stuff, tell me tell me
Who do you think you are
Mr. Big Stuff
You're never gonna get my love

I'd rather give my love to a poor guy that has a love that's true (oh yeah)
Than to be fooled around and get hurt by you
Cause when I give my love, I want love in return (oh yeah)
Now I know this is a lesson Mr. Big Stuff you haven't learned

The Queen Box Springs have to go into my upstairs through a 2nd story window. Fortunately the first story porch sticks out under the window. gets tiresome after a while.
