Last week I got an ominous looking letter from the IRS indicating that there was an error on my tax return. Things got brighter when it said that I had overpaid and would be receiving a check. Well, the check finally arrived and I have an official government check in the amount of $2.28. My S.O. and I have decided that we will need to hold a series of workshop meetings to decide where to distribute these unexpected gains. Can you guys help us out with any suggestions?
I'm wondering how much money it cost them to prepare and send the letter and check. Given that we round all tax return stuff to the nearest dollar anyway, this amount is easily within the range of error of the final tax number anyway. I wish they had just kept it and given me a break for next year.

Hah. I once got a refund from a retailer that was for less money than they spent on the postage to send me the check.

I got a nasty letter from a video rental place... turned out I owed them .28 (yes, twenty eight cents).
Because of the snotty tone of the FIRST letter, I chose to ignore it.
They sent 3 more increasingly nasty letters (costing them well more than .28 each).
Here's the funny part; they sent it to a collections agency, and I got a letter from them trying to collect the "unpaid debt" with all sorts of ominous language about "wage garnishment".
I sent them a nickel with a note: "Offer for settlement in full".
I never heard from them again, so I'm guessing they accepted.
(And before anyone gets excited - this was 15 years ago... even if they'd dinged my credit- and it would be a pretty small ding!, it's long gone by now).

My mother got a stimulus check for $1.28.
this was after the Gov sent 2 letters telling us about the fact that she was entitled to stimulus money.
I framed the check.

And yet, if you had owed that much, they'd hound you to death.
I still fondly recall deliberately overpaying the last bill to a particularly heinous credit card company after I canceled the account by $0.01. And watched them send me two years of statements to that effect.
