I assume cats can tolerate cold weather OK when they sleep outside.

My 8-month-old cat likes to sleep on an old couch on the carport in 30-degree weather, although I fixed him a shelter with a big box surrounded by tarps next to where he sleeps. I guess he knows what is best and his fur keeps him warm, but I feel sorry for him sleeping in the cold. This is the first cat I have had since I was a kid, so I am not very knowledgeable of cats.

We had one cat that was an inside cat during the day. But he refused to stay in the house at night, no matter if it was 15 above and snowing. I had to build him a warm shelter outside so he could stay in that when it was really cold. And he lived a long life, too.

Is he not welcome to spend the night in the house or does he want to be outside? As long as he's sleeping on the old sofa by choice, I wouldn't worry about it. He has a warmer, more protected, place to be, and he'll either be smart enough to go in there before he freezes to death or you can get a smarter cat after this one turns into an ice cube.

how do you think they lived for thousands of years before they became cute pets and were allowed inside?

heck, even you with no fur would manage to survive.

We have one Barn cat that never comes inside, she's the sister to Fuzziegirl. She's about 13
years old and is actually healthier than her inside sister. Last winter they were calling for a
low of +7 and we brought in Subway our dog in but Chip would never do inside, she won't even
stick her inside the door. I spent that cold night in the Den with Subway, he stays inside with
us in the evenings inside until about 11 or 12 and then he goes into our detached garage that's
half open on the sides, he has a doghouse with lots blankets. Chip has a big comforter in a
box on the carport she's been sleeping in lately. In the summer she sleeps on the barn loft.

So 30 degree weather shouldn't pose a problem.

Fuzziegirl, a long haired Calico pretty much sleeps wherever she likes:

Sadly she's losing weight and no matter what we do it doesn't make any difference. We've had
her lightly checked over at the Vet, he said he could do a more extensive exam but at her age
there's probably nothing that can be done if he found anything. I told him no that we would
just let live out the rest of her life peace. She's pretty much my cat, she sleeps with me and
LC sleeps with my wife.

LC, he thinks he's a Nativity animal.
