Acer Aspire One, Keep it or Not?

One co-worker bought the notebook from Costco early today. She asked me to remove all the junkware and install free anti-malware apps, FF, Open Office Suite, etc. I obliged; the netbook would not. It would freeze up whenever I opened more than two windows, i.e. Control panel, two downloads, IE. I had no such issue with another co-worker's Gateway notebook.

Edit: the Acer's button takes quite some effort to press.

Ok. Now what is the latest on the notebook? That is which model should she gets? This co-worker is a graduate student living on a very tight budget even though she is holding down three part-time jobs, the equivalent of one full time job and one part-time one combined.

i guess you should at least give a clean install a try before returning it.

there are a whole bunch of netbooks out there with the exact same specs. the aspire is just about identical to the dell mini 10v. get whatever is cheap.

might be worth buying used. many a nerd have decked one out, gotten bored, and sold it.

I believe there are few members here who are thinking of selling their notebooks now that iPad is here.

Does it work when you start in XP's safe mode? Have you run any XP cleanup programs on it, such as a registry cleaner?

I have one with XP and it's not delightful but OK.

My son has been using one of those heavily since last June. He loves it and hasn't had any trouble with it at all. Are you sure you're not the one who messed it up when you were "cleaning it up"? Sorry, I just had to ask, since I know several people with Acer Aspires of one size or another, and none of them have any any problems.

No, I haven't tried XP safe mode.

AlphaDog,
I tried to clean it up but it kept on freezing up.

I suspect the Acer is downloading many system updates in the background - which will slowdown the netbook.

$299 for a 3 cell, 10.1 inch Acer is no deal. Acer just introduced their 6 cell, 10.1 inch model with the newer Atom processor with 8 hours of battery life. Amazon is selling this model now for $299

That is a better deal. Thanks Forrest. I shall forward the info to my coworker.
