I guess that it's quite fitting that a day after Team USA upset the heavily-favored Canadians in hockey that the biggest upset in US olympic history happened three decades ago today.

I was in 4th grade and almost instantly, every kid in my class knew who Mike Eruzione & Jim Craig were.
I visited the ice rink in Lake Placid back in the 1990s and admit that I felt a chill when I looked around and imagined the stands packed with flag-waving hockey partisans.

I find that people who say that they don't like hockey have most often not actually watched a hockey game live. Hockey on TV is a feeble attempt to capture the excitement and fast pace of a hockey game. When viewed live it is an amazing displace of athletic grace and stamina. It is surprising how quickly they move, turn, accelerate and then accurately shoot a puck through a dozen legs into a corner of the net that is about 6 in2 at 100MPH. The game is non-stop action from buzzer to buzzer. I really wish that Seattle had a hockey team. For me, the nearest hockey team is the minor league Tri-Cities Americans.

I have attended hockey games, in case you're keeping track for your anecdotal statistics.
In general, though, I find I would rather play than watch sports. Watching them only makes me want to go do it. But not hockey. I can't get into it at all. Just my personal preference. Nothing more.

This was awesome. I remember it vividly. I was in 5th grade. There is a movie on it from a few years ago with Kurt Russell that is quite good. There was a segment on NBC yesterday with interviews of Eruzione and Craig (and I think a third player) done by Al Michaels that was too short but very well done.

I tried to watch the segment on NBC but had too many distractions. I taped it so I can watch it later. I was also in 4th grade and remember how excited we were that Jim Craig was coming to play for the Atlanta Flames. I saw a couple of games before they went north to Calgary. Unfortunately for Atlanta, Craig's best games were during the 1980 Olympics.

We had a pond-lake across the street growing up, so we played a bit of hockey.
Still have all my teeth, but pucks , sticks and ice can hurt.
Been to Lake Placid, too. Like the Grand Canyon those ski jumps are a lot more impressive live.
Never played in the street, though.

Notice the "CCCP" on those jerseys? That's not the Canadians.

Specious argument.
And from your anecdotal research, how many people who had previously not actually watched a hockey game live, fell in love with the game after attending a live performance?
I don't like hockey, have never been to a live game, and attending one or several would do nothing to change that.
The same applies to curling. And lacrosse, and other sports.
I've never been to actually watched any gymnastics competition live, but enjoy watching them on the tube, taped or live. Same applies to swimming, and other sports.

I think attending a swim meet would make me sick. I can't stand the chlorine vapors in most indoor pools. Gives me headaches.
