I sent in my iPod Touch (16 gig, 2nd gen) last week for Applecare repairs after the headphone jack only played out of one channel. It was denied coverage due to the moisture sensors having been activated.
I was irate when they told me this as I ALWAYS protect my iPod and it has NEVER been in contact with water... I was searching forums for a while trying to figure out if there was anything I could do -- and then I hit one post that pointed out that when you install Zagg's InvisibleShield (as well as other 3rd party protections) that you SPRAY THE SHEILD and it is quite wet when you install it.
I am sure that is how I must have tripped the sensor. I can't think of any other way.
I just wanted to warn others out there that you might (or may have already) void your Applecare if you aren't EXTRA careful when installing aftermarket protection.
(I just noted the irony that in trying to protect my iPod, I voided the warranty)
That's crap, but I guess it *is* my fault. Dangit.

Do you live in cold weather? Tons of stories about cold weather tripping those moisture sensors. But yeah, I bought one of those Zagg shields, and after I put down the moisture on the faceplate of my iPhone, I said "f**k this", wiped it off, and returned the kit to Best Buy. Didn't trust the process.

Wisconsin? Yeah, it gets a bit nippy here.

Do a google search. Seems the moisture sensors can trip at -11 degrees.

No kidding? I'll check that out for sure... maybe I can convince a Milwaukee Apple Store employee to hear me out if that's the case.

It is not any actual temp like 11 degrees that triggers the sensors it is the change in temp when going indoors. Anyone who wears glasses knows how much condensation can build up on a surface just from coming in out of the cold.

The moisture sensor that gets tripped the most is the one immediately under the headphone jack.
It seems that when people sweat heavily during a workout with an iPod in-hand or in an armband, moisture is prone to gather at that spot.

I have the power support anti glare film on my touch. Didn't take any water to install, and I have to say it works great and looks much better than the shiny glass screen. So very much well worth adding.
I am not convinced that the Apple can void the warranty like that, at least it seems to me that it is a factual question about whether or not the ipod was actually damaged, and if that damage would cause the repair in question. I don't really see how water damage could cause you to lose one channel in the audio. So if you want to write a demanding letter to them, or sue them in a small claims court locally for breach, I would go for it.
The moisture sensor that I know of is down at the bottom of the headphone jack, and I don't see how spraying or installing a screen protector would implicate that at all. So that doesn't make sense to me either.

Can't you buy replacement moisture sensors online?

Having installed a few shields, it makes perfect sense to me.
There is a lot of water under the the shield. As you squeegee it out, it's easy for it to run over the jack, get sucked in, and as the 'Phone/Touch is moved around, a drop can fall into the device.
This is even more problematic if a shield is installed on the back of a device.
