I have a time machine backup that has been performing well for a couple of years now - but over the last day or so has been giving me error messages.
I went in with disk utility and got no error messages, but erased and reformatted just to be safe.
Still getting error messages after backing up about 5 G of a ~230 G backup.

Disk utility is no assurance a drive is good. Recently had one of the infamous Seagate 1TB drives pass all tests with flying colors but TimeMachine fell on its face. Replaced with Hitachi and all is well again. Also if this is external enclosure try substituting another if you have one? I am on a MacPro so I have can move drive to internal bay to rule out enclosure or connections. TimeMachine is great but finicky as hell. I run Retrospect, CCC and TimeMachine and spend more time on troubleshooting TM than the other two combined.
