I have rented my last DVD from a local Blockbuster store. They're $5 now.

Seems like it was about $3.50 for a long time, and recently too. I guess it went up last month when they also brought back late fees.

The gal at the counter had to ask for my $5 twice before I handed it over, I was in such disbelief.

We have their Total Access Premium for one disc out at a time (the original one that's $12 with unlimited in-store exchanges. New sign-ups are limited to 5 exchanges, or $22 for what we have for unlimited.)

But tonight's was an impulse rental as I was returning another from our plan. From now on no more rentals that fall outside the plan.

However, they did have a good deal going in Jan or was it Feb—all of their Family movies were $1 back then.

And no, I'm not a candidate for streamed/downloaded movies.

Yikes. I don't even BUY used dvds that high anymore.

Sounds like desperation. Hollywood Video, in our neighborhood, closed a few months ago. I suspect most G&S stores in residential neighborhoods are becoming obsolete. Blockbuster can suck it! Who needs 'em?

I need 'em. What I have is a better deal for me (not a lot, but somewhat) than renting DVDs from Netflix.

What kind of "deal" do you have that makes it better than Netflix?

Netflix's cost advantages are my main motivation, I spend the minimum monthly fee (around 10 bucks, one disk at a time) and see about a dozen movies a month. Not counting the free streaming movies I can see around the clock, on multiple devices, including our DVD player, my iPad, my computer, XBox, etc.

For ten bucks a month? Trying to figure out what Blockbuster has that beats this, costwise.

Isn't the Netflix plan $8.99 for 1 disc at a time unlimited (plus unlimited streaming).

Deckeda, do you have broadband? If you don't, I would consider the 2 at a time unlimited plan for $13.99. You get to save money and time by not needing to drive to Blockbuster. Might be worth the $1/month increase.

Around here there are Blockbuster vending machines (similar to Redbox) near the door in every Publix supermarket. $1 per night, and you get a return receipt by email (often with a coupon for rent one, get one free or some such).

I use BB on-line, about $22 a month. 3 at a time, and since they have several distribution centers within 100 miles, I usually get 2-3 cycles a week. I get my mail very early in the AM. If I am home and not busy in my home office, I can watch them, and return them at my local BB 10 blocks away, and new ones usually get mailed out the next day. 5 times a month, I also get an in-store exchange. Return an on-line disk, and get a disk from the store.

Nov-Dec, they did unlimited in-store exchanges, and the end of Dec, they extended it through the end of March. I swear I lost muscle mass over the winter. Are they scrambling? Yes. Are they "Done" not yet. For me, Netflix would be a step down.
