Worth upgrading my iPhone?
#1
I have an 8GB 3G and am eligible for an upgrade, so I took a look at the 16GB 3GS from Walmart. I bought the 3G as a refurb so I paid $99 2 years ago.

I am not having any problems with the iPhone and am nowhere near capacity on it (keep a limited number of songs and don't really have that many apps) but I was wondering if it made sense to upgrade now while they are blowing out the 3GS models.

Obviously, I have no need or desire for the latest and greatest and I am comfortable buying a model that is being phased out, so that is not a concern.

Your thoughts?

if you don't mind extending your contract, buy it, and sell your other one for $$$.
You can most likely make some money on the deal, and if you unlock/jailbreak it, even more.

or you can sell it to me for the MacResource friends and family price!

I am finding the $99 very tempting, since I am still using a 4-Gigabyte first generation iPhone. On the other hand, I've gotten sort of attached to it and it does cost $10 a month less. :-)

Or you could wait until they announce the new ones to see if there is any compelling reason to grab the latest and greatest.

I have a 3GS and the speed difference over my old 3G was very noticeable. And as much as I dislike Wal-Mart, that is a very good price.

What is the monthly charge for an iPhone with AT&T? My son has something 3G that runs $20 a month extra for the data plan. No, if I remembered what it is, I would have just said so.

iphone (and all other smart phones) are $30 a month extra -- which is the real reason my wife and I are still shunning the iphone/smartphone switch

extra $360 a year + cost of phone ($99 and up) is just kind of a buzz kill -- if we both wanted them = $1000 a year that we dont have...

Yes, the charge is $30/month. I have been with AT&T (previously Cingular, previously Cingular 1) for over 10 years and they suck rotten eggs, but oh well.

I am self employed and run my business off my MacBook and my iPhone. I held off on getting a smart phone as long as possible and waited for the refurbs because the thought of spending $$ on a cell phone was outrageous to me.

Believe me, I am not into "toys" nor am I anxious to spend $$ that I don't really have. I am, however, trying to make a smart buying decision on a piece of business equipment.

Why not wait and see what gets introduced on June 7? You will probably still have time to get the 3GS if you want it, and if you like what Steve introduces at the developer conference, well, you are just a year away from a half-price buy on that model.

iPhone OS 4 will work on 3G, but many of its great new features require a 3GS.

just FYI.
