USCG says "Top Kill" worked...

By Jim Tankersley, Los Angeles Times

Reporting from Houma, La. —
Engineers have stopped the flow of oil and gas into the Gulf of Mexico from a gushing BP well, the federal government's top oil-spill commander, U.S. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, said Thursday morning.

The "top kill" effort, launched Wednesday afternoon by industry and government engineers, had pumped enough drilling fluid to block oil and gas spewing from the well, Allen said. The pressure from the well was very low, he said, but persisting.

Now we can get on to the rest of the steps.

Politicians, Lawyers, Guns, and Money...

And eventually cleanup. Yeah, that's important too.

Good news for sure, but I don't think they can cap or plug until the pressure is near zero. Hopefully we'll be there in a day or less.

1/2 to 1 MILLION barrels a day were gushing out (BP's initial bs "estimate" was 5000 barrels a day!), which will negatively alter the life of the sea and eventually the entire planet, for the rest of our lives, and beyond.

If investigations prove the cause of this (and the death of 11 men on the rig) was BP's sheer greed, then I hope the company is bankrupt by lawsuits in return, and that criminal charges are brought as well.

Imagine what the Chinese govt would do to them if BP was CP...

Big Oil = Big Money, which pays for LOTS of good lawyers to make things go away.

Look at what Exxon got away with when Valdez leaked.

as usual, the Golden Rule = those with the gold make the rules.

While they may deserve it, there would be larger implications to consider. If the company did go bankrupt and ceased to provide oil to the world would we be able to make the changes necessary to survive? Sure someone else would get in there and drill, but I think many people could not handle a spike in prices from decreased supply, or would be willing to switch to less consuming alternatives.

Here's my request:

Please, before they are bankrupted, at least let them finish, or make a really noticeable dent, on cleaning up the spilled oil.
