Pixma croaked. Time to get an All-in-One color printer.
#1
We decided a long time ago that if our Canon Pixma IP3000 croaks we'd get an all-in one. But now we don't absolutely need the fax function anymore. What is the recommended machine these days that doesn't cost a fortune in ink cartridges?
Canon MX860?
HP Photosmart?
Anybody still use Epson?
Brother?

I really like our Epson Workforce 610. Gets a lot pages per cartridge. I've used it quite a bit
and bought it mid. Dec. '09. It's just now saying the Cyan and Magenta are getting low. Wireless
printing set up was extremely simple. We got lucky and caught on sale for $99 no rebate. Carts
are reasonably priced, $29 for all 4 at Amazon for genuine Epson.

I'd prefer a b&w laser and pay per print for color.

I have a Canon MF4350 b/w laser AIO. Scans OK, software is Image Capture or VueScan. Both very slow.
Printer is great, fax is fine. Less than $150.
My mum has a MX850 AIO. Color
Better scanning, though still slow compared to Fujiscan.
Fax is fine. $150

Black & a few others have the Epson WorkForce 600 and seem to like it.

I got the WorkForce 500 back before xmas @ Target for $40 {closeout}:
4 ink tanks
USB 2.0 (NO net or WiFI)
30 page ADF
NO computer needed for photo, copier, or fax functions
Built-in memory card slots, PictBridge port, and 2.5-inch color LCD

ez scanning & Epson provides good support for 10.6 and the WF500 came with a suite of Mac apps. Cheap & reliable 'clone' carts are readily available too.

To clarify:
I also use a Brother 5250DN for B+W laser. The new printer will be for the family and must be AIO for a variety of uses.
I will hook it up via ethernet, and prefer 4 or 6 inks rather than a combo color cartridge.
Duplex and fax are nice but not necessary. Scanning and copying are.
Do Epsons still have a problem with ink clogging?
I will probably get one this weekend at Costco, Office Max or Best Buy.

Our HP photosmart premium has been good for the last year

Just purchased our first third-party inks.

The wifi network connection is very nice.

Buck,

Ink is going to cost you regardless of make and model. Fortunately, you'll never have to pay full price for ink. That and if you don't print that much then it shouldn't even matter. You should focus on the features you want in the printer and the amount of $$$ you've allocated towards purchasing it.

Based on your posts, here's what I'd recommend in the printer:

1. HP Officejet 6500 Wireless

Or

2. Canon MX860

3 Canon MX 870

None of these machines are the least expensive printers but they aren't the most expensive either. They aren't necessarily geared for home usage. The meant for home offices and/or small businesses and should be more robust than home oriented models. If I needed an inkjet all-in-one for my home or small business, I'd seriously consider one of these models. That or I'd spend the extra bucks and get an Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless.

I have an Officejet Pro 8500 wireless at home. Wouldn't recommend it for most homes only because it's overkill for home usage. The 6500 wireless would've done the job nicely for me but I got an amazing deal in the Officejet Pro 8500 and couldn't pass up on it. Love the printer!

I wouldn't waste my time and/or money on a Brother printer. Brother printers both inkjet and laser have reliability and toner usage issues. Been there and done that many times. They're garbage. So, if I were to have to replace my Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless, I'd get the HP Officejet 6500 Wireless.

The Officejet 6500 wireless offers a great balance of features for the $$$ and I like HP. However, I've heard great things about the Canon Pixma MX860. I don't like that you have to physically connect the printer to configure the wireless networking. That's just stupid in this day and age. However, it's supposed to work nicely once the wireless is configured. The MX870 is a newer version of the machine. I nearly got the MX860 but passed on it when I found the deal on the Officejet Pro 8500 wireless.
