Who cares? It is a sporting event. The point of the game is not the outcome, or so I thought, but the actual game.

I understand davester's feelings on the issue, but we talk about things here - lots of things. That's what we do. The World Cup series is one of the biggest events in the world just now and, as such, the topic of much discussion worldwide. How is one to know when it is "safe" to discuss the results of a game?

I get that. And I personally have avoided in previous threads mentioning anything that would indicate a winner of the games.
My point is, it's not that big of a deal relative to things that really matter and I wonder where this "common courtesy" is supposed to extend.
So, if you stop off at the store and the guys in line are talking about it, is it ok to admonish them for it? It seems absurd to me and if you're going to partake in a public activity, be it shopping or frequenting an online public forum, you relinquish your expectations to be ignorant to the outcome.
Even say it is 100% agreed upon that it's not ok to discuss an outcome of an event immediately afterward. What is the expiration date on that? 24 hours? 48 hrs?
It just seems a bit self-absorbed when someone refuses to take responsibility for their own actions that are as much the cause for "spoiling" their ignorance about the outcome of a game, Oscar winner, election or whatever

I prefer to experience a movie in private, alone, I hate watching with a group. Having stated that, I don't freak out when people start talking about a movie while I am in a public space. Why would I? Can't stop people from doing what comes naturally.

Oh, so the thing YOU'RE interested in has a different set of rules.
I don't think anyone is freaking out, just pointing out that they're on the negative end of a breach of common curtesy.

Reading comprehension not your strong suit? I just said I watch movies by myself not that I've banned the world from talking about movies in general. Tell me what happens in Avatar, I don't care. Want to watch Avatar with me? No thank you, I prefer to enjoy movies in a private viewing.

Are you intentionally misunderstanding this? Whether people are free to discuss such topics is not the issue, and many threads discuss sports scores, exciting TV show episodes, cliffhangers, and the like. However, almost everybody who does that has the courtesy to not reveal the ending or spoil the cliffhanger in the subject line of their thread. Many people also clearly label threads with spoilers by typing the word "spoilers". This is just standard forum (or watercooler) etiquette. Intentionally putting spoilers in subject lines, whether it is sports, battlestar galactica episodes, newly released whodunit movies, american idol winners or whatever, is plain rude.
