On the "Rockline 2003" show, someone called in and asked the band for the history behind this disc, and Bun E. Carlos gave the explanation. The "In Color" album was produced by Tom Werman, but the band always felt that Werman screwed up the album. "He made it safe for radio, but the album sounds like it was done in a cardboard box." So about five years ago [late 1990s] they were in the studio hanging around with the producer Steve Albini, and had nothing to do for a few days, so they said "Yeah, that would be fun to redo that." So they started re-recording the songs. They have not finished it yet, haven't gotten all the harmonies or instruments on it yet, but someday they might finish it and piggyback release it as a bonus disc with something else.

Background information may be obtained here, but the gist of it is that Cheap Trick went into the studio to re-record the album due to the fact that the original record was mixed by Helen Keller. It has never been properly released (it finally found its way into the hands of a few collectors via a master-sourced CD leaked by an ex-employee of the band's), though looking to the future I hope it will one day be finished and properly released. It is a real gem of a find, as the cuts are absolutely stunning. The godfathers of modern hard rock once again prove their worth. Also, they never broke up. You know, like the Pixies. F__k you.

I remember back in the 80's hearing Neilsen describe Cheap Trick as "lots of people's fifth-favorite band." I always loved that.

Thanks for the good info and anecdotes.
I played a few jobs with an orchestra conducted by Nielsen's father, a very funny man with his own "schtick" but also a very competent conductor, and I see a lot of him in Rick when he's onstage.
A also once played a job with another orchestra where Rick played a guitar concerto, but didn't fully appreciate it at the time (was too caught up in thinking of him as a has-been- talking late 80s.)

Oh-- they played Magical Mystery tour with a bit of a medley into a few other songs (I think from that Beatles album)-- wasn't aware of them doing any beatles.
Been trying to figure out which of their hits they didn't play-- I think "Ain't That A Shame" might be the only one but it's nagging me . . .

I was going to see them on the 14th and now you've spoiled the anticipation for me.
Not worth seeing now.

:-)

I'd have gone just to see Squeeze, too.

Cheap Trick is from Rockford so they played the circuit around here in my high school days. They usually
either opened for bigger national acts or headlined regional festivals and always were great band to see live.

Neilson is a part owner of Piece Brewery & Pizzaria in Chicago where the have non Chicago style pizza (aka thin crust)
and feature weekly karaoke with a live band. Rick has been known to front the band on occasion.
He will also personally deliver your pizza for a price and a good cause

It's on my list to visit next time I'm in Chicago. Here they are featured on Check Please !

Holy cow, I had no idea!
I sometimes go to Piece on Thursdays for . . . I guess "dead band" karaoke, will make it a point to try the live band sometimes. The pizza there is just fine.
The info posted to this thread is a great example of why this forum rocks-- you almost always find out something you wouldn't have learned otherwise.

'fil, if you go to Piece, try and get a booth. The tables are REALLY close together and the place can get very loud on weekends. Really nice beer selection!
