I disagree. The jokes were just as shocking then as they would be today. I think Blazing Saddles broke new ground and was the beginning of films where racial stereotypes were blatantly thrown out and laughed at rather than pretending they didn't exist. That was a good thing. Re: I watched a 34 year old movie this afternoon - testcase - 12-20-2010 " Little & Wilder rode off into the sunset in the back of a limousine" Wasn't there also an ending where they drove off into the sunset in a red cadillac convertible? Re: I watched a 34 year old movie this afternoon - Speedy - 12-20-2010 A far right wing radio talker (Jason "I hate..." Lewis) uses as his theme the title song from Blazing Saddles. Re: I watched a 34 year old movie this afternoon - mrthuse - 12-20-2010 Hedley Lamarr: Meeting adjourned. Oh, I am sorry, sir, I didn't mean to overstep my bounds. You say that. Governor William J. Le Petomane: What? Hedley Lamarr: "Meeting is adjourned". Governor William J. Le Petomane: It is? Hedley Lamarr: No, you *say* that, Governor. Governor William J. Le Petomane: What? Hedley Lamarr: "Meeting is adjourned". Governor William J. Le Petomane: It is? Hedley Lamarr: [sighs, then gives the governor a paddleball] Here, sir, play with this. Re: I watched a 34 year old movie this afternoon - Cary - 12-20-2010 "Hold it! Next man makes a move, the nigger gets it!" "Isn't anyone going to help that poor man?" "Hush, Harriet! That's a sure way to get him killed!" "Hello, boys!" "Candygram for Mongo, Candygram for Mongo" "Someone go back and get a bag of dimes" "Oh, it's twue. It's twue. It's twue, it's twue!" "And now, for my next impression... Jesse Owens" "That's Hedley" "Too jewish" So many great lines. Harvey Korman's soliliquies were great. I've always thought that the end fell apart, though. I got the impression that there was a great script that no one knew how to end, they were all sitting around getting high, and thought that the ending as it was done was hilarious. I would have preferred that they stayed in character/time period and figured out a better ending, a la Young Frankenstein... There is no one in Hollywood presently with the stones to make a move like Blazing Saddles today. They wouldn't buck the "PC" crowd to do it. Mel Brooks DID. He COULD. And yes, that WAS and IS a good thing. Re: I watched a 34 year old movie this afternoon - Jimmypoo - 12-20-2010 Why watch those old movies? Any day now, due to the lack of creativity, there will be a p!ss-poor remake coming our way. Re: I watched a 34 year old movie this afternoon - pdq - 12-20-2010 I don't "get" Mel Brooks movies. ("They're all _farting_ around the campfire - cause cowboys eat beeeans! Get it?" ) I must have a defective humor gene. (I like 30 Rock, tho...) The "PC" crowd is not in control of Hollywood. If it was we wouldn't have the insane amounts of violence that currently constitute much of moviedom. |
