Just looked at their site. They offer free "PositiveSSL" and free "WhoisGuard". Are these options I should ignore? I don't want to accidentally make an idiotic decision out of ignorance, just because something is free. Isn't WhoisGuard the same as what GoDaddy calls private registration? I could google all these options and sort through endless pros and cons about these things, but I want to keep it simple.

Yes, ignore both.
Yes, the "guard" is the private registration service which is free for the first year. It isn't automatically added onto your domain, so you can ignore it without any issues. Note that it is free only for the first year and is a subscription service thereafter.
I haven't researched PositiveSSL, but you can certainly ignore it.

i hate godaddy. at work we use godaddy for one business and dreamhost for the other. IMHO, godaddy nickles and dimes you for every little thing whereas at dreamhost it's just there. One thing being email storage. The other thing is I just hate how godaddy's admin section is laid out. I have to google or search their help to figure out how to do just about everything. With dreamhost, again, it's just there. Very straight forward. It's like godaddy is a PC and dreamhost is a Mac. While I can use both, I much prefer one over the other. Again. Just my opinion. YMMV.

I went eeny-meeny-miney-mo and chose namecheap. Just did my registration. Thanks for all the comments, all. GoDaddy's website is too darn busy, and their commercials are kind of repellant, if amusing, so screw'em. :-)

I've got a bunch with directnic. They're slightly more expensive but also put a big chunk of change into rebuilding NOLA since they were based there. I also have quite a few with dreamhost.
I sure hope through all this process you incorporated and are no longer a sole-proprietor.

I spoke to several people, including my very experienced accountant (who works with lots of self-employed people) and a self-employed bookkeeper I know , and none thought getting incorporated or forming an LLC was necessary for the kind of work I do or plan to do.

Expense. Complexity of paperwork. Sheer overkill. Learning curve. Minimal concern about issues of liability with the work I do, which is largely sitting at a Mac in my home office. Also, if I really need to, I can do this later. Everyone else I've spoken to locally (including many small business owners), thinks it is unnecessary for what I'm trying to do.
