What version of the OS is your friend using?
If it's 10.3 or earlier there were some problems with cron jobs that could affect SuperDuper backups.
If it's 10.4 or later, then it's something else... tell your friend to try changing the time of the scheduled backup to an hour earlier.

The only times SD has not worked for me was when a drive was going bad.
