Tell the HR person you're uncomfortable with that and ask that s/he not do it again without clearing it with you.

Call the HR person at home at 8am on a Sunday morning and discuss it with them...

OR change your cell number, and write a letter to the HEAD of HR explaining why you will NOT be giving the company your phone number again - and requesting a written confirmation that they have received and understood this letter. Of course, this won't work if it's a work supplied phone.

How does the HR person know your Cell phone number? What sort of form/document did you fill out that disclosed your cell number to HR? Or did you once personally give your number to this HR person?

Did you ever provide it for some sort of company directory? In which case I don't think you should assume that it's private.

Absolutely unethical. - RAMd®d - 06-09-2011

No question.

Even if it's work related, unless *maybe* it's a work phone, it's unethical. I don't know about illegal as it criminal, but I bet in many states it could qualify for civil action. Not that it's where you necessarily want to go.

If it really bothers you, and/or if it were me (being violated, not being the violator) the company would reimburse me for changing my number, a pain though it be.

Cell number, home number, makes no difference-- absolutely unethical.

I would ask HR-- WTF?! If they have a good explanation (which is no excuse) a friendly explanation of ethics might suffice. If the explanation is stupid (meaning one you don't agree with) a Riot Act may be in order.

It's not at all uncommon to give HR more information as to how to be reached that fellow employees would not be privy to.

And if CJ were in some kind of directory, I doubt that HR would have even been involved. Not to mention CJ seems like a smart enough girl to realize that if her number were in a work directory, the expectation of privacy would be limited to non-existant.

And that doesn't mean that any employee *gets* to call that number (from a work directory) for non-work related reasons. It just means that HR would likely be off the hook, ethically and legally.

From what the first post said, three words-- absolutely frikkin' unethical.

I say UNETHICAL. What do YOU say?

Is she cute?
Not by a long shot.

It's my personal number I've had for years. I give it out sparingly and at MY choosing. I'd given it to HR when I was involved in a test group when our company was switching to a new software package nearly a year ago. (The test group members were "on call" one weekend for when the next phase of testing was ready.)
I asked the coworker how they got my number and they told me. When I asked the named (HR) person if they had any idea how this person came by my number, she said, "noooo..."
The reason HR Lady gave the number might have been valid. (I was returning to work to meet my coworker because she was adopting a kitten I've been fostering.) From my point of view, HR Lady should have called me herself to pass along the message OR called to ask if it was okay to give out my number.
And not lied about it. I'll never trust anything from her mouth again.

I'm still trying to understand why you're getting all huffy about a coworker getting your cell phone number.

Re: Absolutely unethical. - RAMd®d - 06-09-2011

HR Lady should have called me herself to pass along the message OR called to ask if it was okay to give out my number.

Exactly. THAT's how an ethical professional would have handled it.

And not lied about it.

Exactly, again.

I'll never trust anything from her mouth again.

Lying is unethical x 2.

It sounds like the reason is ultimately innocent enough, and a sincere apology probably would have fixed things. Anybody can make a mistake, but handling it with a lie is the real "crime" here".

wait, is your coworker a member of congress?
