Accounts with Chase, Capitol One, Wells Fargo, etc. are just a fscking waiting to happen. Join a credit union or bank with a small local bank.

Honestly, the managers at my local WF have been pretty good to me. But obviously they're limited on what all they can do. Waiving dumb fees is something they can do.

Chase, IMHO, operates much worse than a bank should, and probably illegally
WF tends to operate exactly as advertised
My CU tends to go above and beyond, often not charging fees when they actually have a right to.

Space,

I refinanced my apartment and it took nearly 9 months from start to finish, despite excellent credit and complete paperwork. My original mortgage was with Chase. My mortgage is with Wells Fargo now. Chase never charged me a Fax Fee. Ever. But, this was in '09. It may be a new fee.

That said, if you have someone representing you for the refinancing, bring up the payoff quotes and fees as an issue. Chase may refund the fees or the new lender may reimburse you the costs. Either way, you shouldn't have to pay for more than one, especially because this is taking place through no fault of your own.

Robert

$29.99 every time the name Chase is mentioned! Extra fee if you're breathing the air belonging to Chase.

George Harrison's "Taxman" comes to mind.

The Pony Express fee is a real bitch.

Wait, that's a Wells Fargo fee.

Refinancing charges and fees are legendary. Your $30 fee is just one of many. I bet if you check your original mortgage it is loaded with them. http://www.moneyeconomics.com/Mortgage-Finances/The-Cost-of-Saving-Money-Examining-the-Refinancing-Fees http://www.federalreserve.gov/pubs/settlement/default.htm
