Since my iMac is my iTunes server I try not to reboot very often. In this case I gave in and it seems to have resolved itself. I should have done that before posting but I had hoped for some evidence I did something dumb that could be easily fixed. Now I still probably did something done but the evidence has been erased...

Stuck option key or sticky keys enabled and you tapped the option key.
