It's stupid that Apple doesn't offer an SSD option.

Edit: Correction, Apple offers several SSD options.

bottom cover can no longer be removed by the user.

security torx screws. one buried hard drive connector.

RAM soldered? This is getting pretty stupid. I'm not sad I got my NUC instead of waiting for the revamped mini. Was kind of nice being able to pick SSD, RAM, and WiFi card. NIce level of control. Need more info to know if the Mac mini is going to remain on my shopping list for future upgrades.

for someone like my aging parents, who do email and web and Farmville, it would be fine.

except Adobe Flash / Farmville is a nightmare. my dad is frustrated and the game has tons of trouble loading. i've tried lots of different fixes.

getting him to stop playing it isn't one of them, unfortunately.

I've been eyeing NUCs and BRIXes since the announcement yesterday.

Wrong-- just log into your Apple support account and check the manual :-)

Many models can run OS X. I didn't bother even though I used to have three other hacks. Getting older, need something to just work, so I went with a Linux installation. Which is totally unintuitive, but hacking OS X is generally more involved than installing a Linux distro on common hardware.

I never grokked the whole config process and kept doing things manually with boot parameters, manually loading/unloading kexts, and manually updating Chameleon, etc. My hardware generally had enough edge cases that it wasn't a straight installation and often ended up breaking sleep. Oh well. Guess I'm not tech savvy enough to handle hacks anymore. A NUC Mac running Mavericks would be pretty swell.
