Re: Battery recall--so now I have a very fast Mac Plus - MGS_forgot_password - 08-25-2006 There were nine reports of batteries overheating, with no fires, and Apple's recalling 1.8 million batteries. I don't think the odds are too bad. Re: Battery recall--so now I have a very fast Mac Plus - Silencio - 08-25-2006 If this safety defect was discovered recently and affects machines sold through this month, then it stands to reason that Apple or Sony would not be sitting on a huge inventory of "good" batteries. It takes a lot of time to manufacture 1.8 million replacement batteries and get them out to the customers, especially when another competitor has to do the same with 4 million+ batteries and you use the same battery manufacturer as they do! If Apple were still charging $5,000 for its portables and pocketed $1,000 profit from each unit sold, I would be more upset about the situation. There are major tradeoffs that have been made to bring us the cheap machines we can't buy enough of today. The market has spoken: if you don't like it, work to change it (refer to any thread about Wal*Mart). If you absolutely need portability and aren't willing to risk the infinitesimal chance that your Powerbook's battery will overheat, buy one of NewerTech's batteries. Re: Battery recall--so now I have a very fast Mac Plus - trisho. - 08-25-2006 Could you possibly just buy a new battery in the interim then return it when the replacement arrives? Re: Battery recall--so now I have a very fast Mac Plus - elmo3 - 08-25-2006 [quote mattkime]How long have you been using the battery? The risk is no higher now than it was before. Actually, it is. Now *I* own the liability should I choose to continue using the battery that was built with known defects. I couldn't face myself if I selfishly chose to use the battery and in doing so caused a fire that destroyed my house (for which I would likely get no insurance coverage, due to my neglect of using a battery that Apple said to stop using) or killed any of my family. And Apple, due to its negligence in dealing with its suppliers, has put me in that position. I did not spend my money to have Apple look at me and say, "Gee, well, don't carry your computer around for the next 6 weeks." Re: Battery recall--so now I have a very fast Mac Plus - Spiff - 08-25-2006 Apple fessed up to the inadequate hardware. They are replacing it for free. There are millions of batteries that need to be replaced. There are no warehouses in existance that are housing brand-spanking new batteries without issues. It takes time. Please be patient. Out of the almost 2 million batteries that are being recalled, only, what, 9 of them went wrong. What are the odds that something will happen to yours? Very Very slim. I know/realize that you have a family to protect. Did you know that we all take a risk of getting hurt by living? Yes, you are getting a new one. Please relax your sense of entitlement a little. In general, I think we as Americans (myself included at times) have an over inflated sense of entitlement. Nothing is perfect. That's pretty much a given. Things need fixing all the time. And, gosh. It takes time to fix things. Sometimes longer than we want it to be. And. Hi tech sometimes takes that much longer to fix. I feel for you and my parents (and possibly myself - I need to check) who are in the same boat. Complaining about it isn't going to make much of a difference, however. Sorry for any inconvenience. I rarely write inflammatory responses. Sorry. Off my soap box, now. I'll stop quietly ranting. :? Re: Battery recall--so now I have a very fast Mac Plus - rz - 08-25-2006 oh c'mon y'all. elmo just wants to piss and moan about his $hitty life. Let's all give him the pity party he so desparately wants. All together now: AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!! Re: Battery recall--so now I have a very fast Mac Plus - OWC Jamie - 08-25-2006 How do you know the problem is not SONY not having a spare 3 million batteries sitting around ? They're supposed to tell people to keep using a potential fire hazard while they gear up for the onslought ? Never underestimate the repugnancy of a stupid person, even in a small group. ![]() Re: Battery recall--so now I have a very fast Mac Plus - SeattlePhotog - 08-25-2006 [quote elmo3] However, I have a wife and children. I have no desire to subject them to this thing possibly catching the house on fire. I can't believe Elmo went out and bought a Filipina mail-order bride...and then HAD KIDS! Jeez. Just what the world needs. More of his DNA. Re: Battery recall--so now I have a very fast Mac Plus - mattkime - 08-25-2006 I suspect that elmo spends a lot of time worry about winning the lottery and other likely senarios. Re: Battery recall--so now I have a very fast Mac Plus - Michael - 08-25-2006 Perhaps taking the battery out when you are not using the laptop and replacing it when you are using it will give you the benefit of the battery without putting house, home and family at needless risk. If it starts to smoke while you are using it with the battery, you can take the appropriate action; take it outside, put it on the ground and start taking pictures! |
