I have had a few and they're all fine. The waffles are better if toasted after they are made, in my opinion, but I like 'em crispy. I make latkes and falafel and other stuff in there too. For normal waffles, I make big batches and freeze... Usually semi-healthy like pumpkin pecan, banana walnut, or cherry almond, and the flour is whole grain and oats. I add protein powder, too. Those are on the road work breakfasts many days.
I don't use spray oil on my non stick devices... I use a silicone brush with melted butter or oil. I think food comes out better and there's no weird residue.

For waffles, our cheap Proctor-Silex has worked fine for many years (although it doesn't get a great deal of use - maybe once a month or so). In answer to your middle question, I've never even considered using it for anything besides waffles.

Back in the fifties when my parent's got married they got a waffle iron that made 4 four by six inch waffles. The grates were removeable for cleaning and reversible to toast sandwiches like grilled cheese or tuna fish. It lasted fifty years before wearing out. Have looked but never saw one similar.

My parents had something similar but I remember it being a little bigger. They might not be identical but there are several similar devices still made. Panini/waffle/sandwich/grill/etc., just depends on how many kinds of surfaces you want and how much you are willing to pay.

I grew up in the '60's, and our family had one of the electric reversible waffle iron / grills. The waffles were 4"x4", and that type is still sold. It was mostly used for pancakes, the two flat grill surfaces provided plenty of space for making many at a time. Waffles came out okay if you paid attention to the heat being fully recovered between each batch.
