The goal is to get people using the library again. Libraries live and die based on use.

Do people ever return the books that they check out?

Yes, indeed! As I said, eventually you will get a bill. The library automatically renews the book if possible, so you can keep it for 2 or 3 months — less time, though, if someone else has put it on hold.

The Library District does not have late fees. However, five or more overdue items or $50.00 worth of overdue materials will block borrowing privileges until the items are returned or paid for. At 60 days overdue and over $50 in charges, the patron account is referred to a materials recovery service. A nonrefundable processing fee is then added to the account.

I always return materials, but am sometimes late. Angel:coffee:

Often times, the local library will waive a fine if it's just a few days' worth. Hell, even if the charge you, ours is like a nickel a day for a book and $1 a day for a dvd. But even then, you usually can borrow a dvd for two weeks (1 week inter-librabry loan). With items that are borrowed via inter-library loan and you picked it up at your local library, they generally enforce the fine when you return it late because they have don't have the authority to waive another library's fine.

I once accidentally threw out a borrowed dvd in my recyclables dumpster at the local transfer station. It was an older dvd so I just bought a new copy ($5 on eBay) and explained what happened when I returned it.

Your local library is one of the places well worth supporting (not that other charities aren't) when we consider the uses of which we can avail ourselves throughout the year.
