I've been using OWC's for CD/DVD/BD disk ripping and DVD burning for 4 years now. An earlier version of the one below as I don't think mine burns BDs. Maybe it does but I have no need for that so I've never tried.

This raises a great point - you may get more utility out of a BD player that can be network-connected from which you can stream the BD content to your. I would expect a more expensive unit like this might have that capability.
Versus playback directly on your computer - CPU intensive and awkward dongle hanging off.
Just a thought.

I just bought this one a couple of weeks ago and it works great.
Pioneer Blu-Ray
If connecting to your Mac, you will need to get a Blu-Ray player app for it as the Mac does not natively support the playing of Blu-Ray Discs. I downloaded the free one from Lea-wo (remove the dash, for some reason the word is banned) and it works great.

Is there such a thing as a combo TV/Blu ray all in one?
FWIW, a decent 32" TV is about $120 -- easier than lugging an iMac?
wifi? something like a firestick/roku/etc could make it play free stuff

Has anyone covered the base that the macOS does not natively play blu-ray discs? That it requires some third-party options in order to play them?

VLC should play Blu-Ray discs.
Edit: but only with 2 files installed:
put the KEYDB.cfg file http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/files/KEYDB.cfg in ~/Library/Preferences/aacs/ (create it if it doesn't exist)
put the libaacs.dylib file http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/files/mac/libaacs.dylib in ~/lib directory (create it if it doesn't exist)
This worked for me on one Mac and not on the other. Go figure.
