No, no, no, be prepared to blast the gunner with you always-carried side arm. And be very, very afraid.

Killings like this have an incredibly wide impact in a place this size. Lewiston is only a city by virtue of being in Maine, the entire population could be contained in a couple city zip codes. My father was from Lewiston where literally everyone is either related to or knows everyone else in town, it's more like a small mid-western mill town than a city and will feel the reverberations from this for generations. It will literally change the history of the place.

true, it is a city. a once thriving place now struggling with the usual problems of many once-thriving jobs centers in America: unemployment, under employment, drug addiction, and general malaise.

"No way to stop this," says the only country where this happens on a regular basis.

They IDed the suspect as 40 year old Robert Card, possibly Army reserve firearms instructor. History of mental health issues.

"Card "recently reported mental health issues to include hearing voices and threats to shoot up the National Guard Base in Saco, ME."
The bulletin said Card was reported to have been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks this summer and then released."

No Red Flag laws in Maine?
You'd think someone threatening to "shoot up" anything (particularly if it got to the point where that person was "committed to a mental health facility") would be at the top of the list for that.

State of Maine governance isn't exactly a hot-button here or anywhere outside Augusta so Caber or someone else more up to date with Maine politics may want to jump in here but as I see it from 3000 miles away:

Maine preceded the Trump debacle by voting whackadoodle Paul LePage Governor for two terms. He in coordination with most local county sheriffs, dropped enforcement of many existing gun laws (not that there were many), rescinded red flag laws and generally followed the script laid out for him in the NRA playbook.

Voters turned him out last election. He just filed as a gubernatorial candidate for the next go round.

So this was simply a campaign event for LaPage to show how anyone can own and keep a gun, even someone as whackadoodle as LaPage’s voters.

LaPage filed to run for governor again...... I guess DeSantis doesn't need a running mate after all.

WHAT? You can’t possibly be suggesting that the State would be allowed to take away one of the most sacred RIGHTS he had just because he had mental health issues.

God forbid!
