the gov't intend the coins to replace paper one day. they're just warming us up to the idea.

paper bills have something like 1/5th of the lifespan of dollar bills, so it makes sense for circulation purposes.

Unless they make coins as light as paper, and just as thin, it is never gonna happen.

One and two dollar coins ("Loonies" & "Twoonies") have been very successful in Canada for over a decade now. There, it's rare to see paper one & two dollar bills now (they're still legal tender though). Phones, vending machines etc. work reliably; something that's not always the case here with "Dollar bill validators". Cash tills at all merchants are set up to facilitate the two extra coins. Like a Mac, it just works! I do find it amazing though that, at the end of the day, I can have $20 or so in coins when I empty my pockets. I don't understand why our government can't get this right and, keep producing coins that can be easily confused.

[quote Seacrest]I always got dollar coins when I bought stamps from the PO vending machine.
I never liked 'em much; mostly used them for tolls.

Now that I rarely mail anything, though, I haven't seen any in a while.
same here

i never saw the gold $ coins

I pulled up to an Illinois Tollway basket that had a handmade sign:
$1
coins only

so I threw in a Minnie Driver/Sacagawea dollar. Nothing happened. Attendant came over and told me off. Machine doesn't take $1 coins, it takes $1, in coins.

BGnR;

It can, and will, happen when the US Mint goes 3 years without printing paper $1 bills, and cranks out dollar coins instead.

You're confusing what would be POPULAR with what would be POSSIBLE.

We'll never replace dollar bills with coins while Luddites are still opposed to getting rid of the most fscking useless coin of all - the penny.

it's difficult to stuff dollar coins in a stripper's g-string, too... though it IS more fun...
