Use low voltage or networking boxes (they're the orange ones, not blue) to create the access holes. They are very shallow and don't have backs, this makes it very easy to fish wires between the boxes.

For those that are reluctant to cut into their wall and fish wires, you could make a wood chase using decorative molding. I've seen this done where it actually looked very nice.

[quote guitarist]Next project for you, beerman, get a decent entertainment cabinet. That one looks like can barely hold the components you've stacked on there.
My first thought also.

That photo is a very interesting juxtaposition of things old and new.

If you do get a different entertainment cabinet/stand, it may be tall enough to go to the bottom of the TV. Or if you have any matching paint, you could maybe make a stand-off panel between the botton of the screen, and the top of the entertainment system, and hang it an inch in front of the wall, and run the wires behind it. Cheap easy fix with just a few sheetrock screws, sheetrock, some paint, and some 1"x2" furring strips.

I agree, I need to remodel the room with new pictures and also a new stereo cabinet. The bedroom seems to be the last room in the house to get that kind of attention. The downstairs, where we have all the family gatherings, has received many upgrades over the last two years. Hey, it's only money!

FWIW, when I was watching Trading Spaces a lot with my wife, the bedrooms were usually the worst room in the house when they started. Or more correctly, the one the home owners waited to do last, because it wasn't a public space. But it should be the most comfortable space, for you and your S/O IMHO.
