If you check out some of his appearances vis a vis the African American community, you will notice that one of his mantras is to minimize and reduce their expectations regarding what "he" can deliver as a sitting president specifically. I don't really think they "hear" that right now however. Consequently, I think it's possible for him to lose them somewhat over time. I remember when Tom Bradley first won for mayor of Los Angeles. The initial expectations of black people were diminished as they discovered that he didn't have nearly enough power to dramatically change the South Central economic landscapes overnight, and to deal with the fact that he was the mayor for "all" of Los Angeles. How words are used is often more important than their actual definition.
