Then detail the specifications of the Mac and all peripherals, your installation/update process and the symptom(s) in detail.

You say that it's a repeatable event, that at a specific point in the install/update process things go wonky, so what step did you take immediately preceding that point?

Also, when "Disk Utility not being able to see any drives" occurs, does the Disk Utility display a spinning beach ball cursor or does it otherwise appear to be functioning normally and let you click buttons to make disk images and such?
