Loading content is not a problem with the iTunes store and Safari web browser. But I don't think there is any way to get updates or backup your data without syncing to a host PC or Mac.

The computer does your backups and you can add your music and video's from your computer plus do updates. So it will most likely stand alone, not stating a fact but that is how the iPod touch works. So I would think the system reqirements for if want to connect.

too bad they didn't activate the bluetooth for syncing (it works for the keyboard).

why does Apple insist on crippling their devices..

I think you need the computer for the initial setup, after that you should only need it to get updates and to do backups. Could just make it a yearly thing or whenever you visit your mother.

I'm betting you don't need a computer at all unless you want to sync, back up, and update your iPad, and as mentioned, add music and apps from your existing iTunes library.

Otherwise, as long as you have WiFi or 3G access, you can download music, apps, and other content, surf, and email all you want.

I assume you'll have WiFi at Mom's house. The 3G connection has a maximum size of 10MB per file for the 'Phone, and I bet it's the same for the 'Pad.

The iPad can be used completely independently.

Was there ever a good solution given to the issue of printing? One that didn't require either a fax machine or an existing computer?

Backing up. That's the issue. Otherwise I don't see a compelling need for a computer for many users.

I wonder if there will be a no-computer backup option. Direct to a TimeMachine backup over WiFi, for example, would make sense.

Bluetooth for 8GB or more of data? Do you know how long that would take?
