I agree. Better bang for the buck with a smart phone versus the iPod touch. Put it in AirPlane mode and don't activate it if you solely want a media player mini tablet. That's what I do with my $60 Moto G. I do miss the click wheel sometimes, but since the touch never had one, it's no loss to switch away.

I was doing this as well, but with the larger capacity iPod classic -- when it worked, it worked great (once I turned off voice recognition/voice control, which choked on the mass of music titles on the iPod), but I would have to do the hard reset far too often.
Streaming is great, and what I do, but I still like the idea of having the whole library available to me sans download, esp since just about every review I read re/iTunes Match has been middling to mediocre.

Our local Target store has at least one sitting in the locked cabinet... for $245.
I'm hoping that the price will drop, Target is pretty good about clearance prices, they want to get old products out quickly.

I tend to only use the Random function when playing music and I don't ever utilize the voice recognition features of my car (but I guess I should... I paid for them, after all), so I probably wouldn't encounter the same problems you did.

Worth keeping an eye on Amazon, too. They tend to drop their price on an items when others do.
