You know, it isn't the actual bacteria thing, it is the idea of what he did. Just like if someone offered me escargot to eat; It would probably be fine if I didn't know I was eating freaking snails, but once I do know, I don't want them.

What about virii?
A fundamental tenet of public health is minimalization or elimination of transmission vectors available to infectious agents. Sticking a serving spoon into one's mouth and then placing it back into service for use by others at a public event such as a party completely violates this tenet.

I remember watching Chopped and one of the chef contestants used the same spoon multiple times. The judges refused to eat the food because of that and he was gone...

.....I saw that episode....you should add that he was tasting the food (in his mouth) and then reusing the spoon to stir, etc.......

While I agree that this is generally considered to be unsanitary, I've always wondered whether the relatively high temperatures used to cook food also act to sterilize it and, if so, whether this practice is of any concern.

I'm a kitchen nazi about using the minimum of silverware as the dishwasher is powered not by electrons but instead by H&B (me). I'm also a minimum of cleanliness nazi and the *bare* minimum is single use tasting flatware.
Use it to taste? Toss it in the sink. No flex on this one, ma'am!

What the man did was obnoxious, disgusting and inexcusable. I would've politely called him on it and brought it to the attention to the host/hostess. That way, the dish could be removed from the buffet table.

Depending on who you ask, it's a matter of contamination, sanitation, and intimacy/familiarity that's at question.
If someone got the last bite, stick, or piece of some morsel that one wanted, would they accept it if the other person removed it from their mouth and offered it up?
For most of us this is probably more about boundaries and circumstances than sanitary practices. Putting the spoon back was disgusting.
If the Margarita Girl offered me a sip of her soda, I'd be inclined to accept.
I wouldn't want to be rude.

My wife is a food pro and when we have a party that involves food we observe commercial / public rules..some people are very squeamy about stuff like this.
Personally, Im pretty easy going and eat stuff off the floor if bored with the plate thing. I also never get sick and i like to believe it's because I've eaten plenty of dirt. It makes me feel all rugged an shit.
I can understand it being Aboslutely freaking disgusting to some, though.
