I already tried Acer tech support and the Indian guys summary after 20 minutes was "So you would like to use the full resolution available?". Useless. Yes, but Jack's Mac seems like it is the device limiting the output. Every tech document I can find from Apple, EveryMac, etc lists maximum output only over dual-link DVI from that Mac mini. I can't say for sure because I never used such a high resolution screen with my Mac mini of the same vintage. Re: Which adapter/port do I need to Connect this Monitor? - silvarios - 08-07-2015 Jack, I can't imagine that working. I had a client that asked if he could convert VGA on his laptop to composite or component video for his HDTV (that he bought partly to connect his laptop and I told him the cheap Plasma without VGA wasn't going to work, but I digress) with a simple adapter. I kept telling my client no because his machine did not have the built in support for such analog connections. As such, he needed an active converter, not just a simple cable adapter. The Best Buy people kept saying it would work, but of course it didn't, but that's another story. I think the same thing applies here. Re: Which adapter/port do I need to Connect this Monitor? - PeterW - 08-07-2015 It won't work period. Buy the $71 adapter if you have to have the 2560x1600 or learn to love the 1920x1200 mDP output. Yes, but they are even more expensive than the Monoprice adapter and have horrible reviews to boot. http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MB571LL/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-adapter http://mjtsai.com/blog/2009/10/03/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-adapter-improved/ Re: Which adapter/port do I need to Connect this Monitor? - PeterW - 08-07-2015 Yup, if you've got one just laying around, it will work perfectly. But as silvarios points out, it is more expensive, it's impossible to find these days and, even after all that, may not work properly. I have a genuine Apple mDP->DL-DVI adapter. I found it kind of buggy and annoying to use. Re: Which adapter/port do I need to Connect this Monitor? - flareslow - 08-07-2015 I have that the Acer K272HUL connected to my 2012 Mac Mini, using a miniDisplayport to Displayport cable with no adapter. I'm getting 2560 x 1440 at 60Hz as I type this. No adapter required. For the OP's older Mac, both sources list dual-link DVI as a requirement for that resolution. As such, I'm guessing it's the Mac, not the monitor, as source of the problem. As stated above the mDP ->DP cable functions but gives me a screen with the black bars. Yeah.. and I was asking about another computer. That way you could rule out some sort of problem with the cable and monitor and place the blame squarely on some sort of unstated requirement of the Mini. |
