I really want a new iMac too, maybe end of the year, would be fine with a current model as a refurb. Could even get by with a 256 Flash only model. But would like the i7 and 4 GB of VRAM for bragging rights. FWIW on your plan. 16 GB (8 x 2) = $100. A single 16 GB chip = $200. So for the price of 24 (4 + 4 + 16) you could just go to 32 (8 + 8 + 8 + 8) and sell the stock 8 GB =) Re: Ram prices have been falling... - C(-)ris - 01-28-2016 jdc wrote: Yeah, maybe I should just stop watching MM. It has a 3.1ghz i7 Quad core, 2GB graphics card, 32GB of ram, room for a 6TB HD as well as a 1TB SSD, and still has an optical drive. No USB3, but that can be rectified with a Thunderbolt dock. Re: Ram prices have been falling... - RAMd®d - 01-28-2016 Other than the retina screen I'm not sure I can justify moving from a mid 2011 27" iMac. As I don't have a 27" iMac, justification isn't an issue. My "newest" is a late 2012 i5, with 8G RAM, bought when it was discontinued. I haven't upgrade the memory yet as it doesn't get much use. Re: Ram prices have been falling... - RAMd®d - 01-28-2016 Yeah, maybe I should just stop watching MM. What fun would that be. And it's more convenient than checking the now-graphicless (for memory Activity Monitor. I can also "optimize" the memory before Safari stalls and tells me to reload all my pages. I dont care about USB 3 either, but I would like 3 screens. Currently running a small screen via USB 2 to DVI adapter and it aint that great. If I had a 2011, I could run those extra screens easier. I could shop around... i just looked on CL and theres a 2011 3.4 i7 but the 1 GB 6970 for $800 about 40 mintues away. 16 GB of ram, prob all 4 slots full. So figure a little more $$ for ram. Theres also a 2012 3.2 i5 with a cracked screen for $800, but almost same geekbench numbers at the 2011 i7. But 32 GB of ram, 3TB Fusion and 2 GB GtX680. New screen is $400+ Re: Ram prices have been falling... - C(-)ris - 01-28-2016 jdc wrote: I would probably say the same thing -- except I have a 2010 2.93 i7. 1 GB 5750, slower SATA I and no T-bolt. So make sure whatever one you buy either had the recall done or is still covered. Re: Ram prices have been falling... - jdc - 01-28-2016 Thanks, good to know. Still on the fence with the whole thing.
