Did the discover one, it shows my score is 5 less than my bank (a credit union), but that's still nearly 30 more than CK.

I see the discover one gives you minimal info about accounts, not really enough to be helpful if you were trying to do some troublehooting.

Discover gives you your actual FICO score but does not give a credit report. CK uses Vantage which credit bureaus have come up with as an alternative to the major cred FICO has in the credit score universe and CK gives you access to what is on your credit report. The info is the same as if you went to annualcreditreport.com. The Vantage score is a useful temp check on your credit health even though it isn't your actual FICO.

(btw, we all have more than one FICO but that's another discussion.)

My daughter is 20 so I suspect her interest has to do with getting an apartment this fall when we anticipate she will return to in person classes. I did check my banks website and they recommend annualcreditreport.com . So I passed that on to her.

annualcreditreport.com will give her a copy of her credit report from all three agencies but she cannot get a score from them. in fact, when you go there you are slammed with offers to PAY for your FICO score. But it is a good start though she could get both her report and her Vantage Score for free from Credit Karma.

[quote=rz]We both pay all of our credit cards off in full every month, except for one that has zero percent interest for another 3 years (why pay it off early when it's at zero percent?)... two of the agencies said both of us had "too many unpaid balances". WTF?

Having a 0% interest rate doesn't mean that you have no obligation to pay a monthly minimum towards the principal without consequences. Take a few minutes to read your card-holder agreement and you'll probably find a clause indicating that they report payment-deficits after 90 days.

Also, by carrying that balance, you're reducing the amount of available credit you have vs the total amount of credit you're carrying and inflating your debt-to-income ratio. That's a ding on your credit score.

Pay off all of your credit cards. There's no upside to carrying balances.
Oh, I pay the minimum amount each month. The balance left is around 5K. If you add up all the available credit I have available on all my credit cards, it's over 50K.

Credit Karma will blast your inbox with thousands of spam messages and sell any info they can harvest from you to all comers. Other sites will enroll you in a monthly plan and bill you a small fortune and will STILL sell all of the info they can harvest from you to other companies.

Often, you can log into the website for your credit card or bank and see your credit score for free without subjecting yourself to that sort of abuse. Check those resources first.

I rarely ever get anything kinda stuff from CK.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credit_Karma

Revenue from targeted advertisements for financial products offsets the costs of its free products and services. Credit Karma earns revenue from lenders, who pay the company when Credit Karma successfully recommends customers to the lenders.

This has not been my experience. The only contacts have been from mortgage vendors, and I did that intentionally through CK.

I just tried transunion, says it uses "vantage score" -- its the same number as CK.
