[quote Paul F.]BGnR;

It can, and will, happen when the US Mint goes 3 years without printing paper $1 bills, and cranks out dollar coins instead.

You're confusing what would be POPULAR with what would be POSSIBLE.
LOL!
I don't know about you, but I vote.
If my government tried that crap, the person(s) responsible would be gone.

OK... so that makes TWO of us..
Think outrage over the dollar bill vs the dollar coin is going to turn an election?
In a Senate where the only thing that unseats 80% of incumbents is being found in bed with a dead girl or a live boy?
Keep dreaming...

Do I think (or WANT) the dollar coin to COMPLETELY replace the bill? Heavens no..
But I'm not naive enough to think it "can't happen" either...

[quote mrbigstuff]paper bills have something like 1/5th of the lifespan of dollar bills, so it makes sense for circulation purposes.

Not in real life...just on paper. Ha ha! Seriously, dollar coins are stupid. I hate all change, but image if there were no paper $1 bills and you get 4 $1 coins back as change to slug in you pocket. Wonderful.

Honestly, I think we are edging more and more towards a cashless society. The parking meters here take credit cards. In Vegas the slots don't give you back quarters, but rather a paper voucher. I rarely keep more than $5 in my wallet.

As for the Prez $s, they aren't collectors items (An item only becomes a "collector's item" after your mom or spouse throws it out) ;-) Seriously, if something is geared a "collectible" it usually isn't. There will be millions of each prez coin made, and companies like the Franklin Mint will horde them so they can colorize them and pawn them off to grandparents as gifts to their grandchildren. Good ploy by Congress to get an interest free loan though.

I don't ever recall voting on any issues involving currency.

I didn't vote for/against the Sacagawea dollar, nor the new $20/$10/$5 bill, nor the new nickel, nor the 50 states quarter series.

And it would be at the bottom of my issues list when voting for a particular politician. Even if he/she backed getting rid of the fscking penny.

[quote incognegro]it's difficult to stuff dollar coins in a stripper's g-string, too... though it IS more fun...
Screw the g-string -- coins are meant to fit into slots. (Tongue)

Paul has it right. Coins WILL replace the bills. It's only a matter of time.

"The use of the Golden Dollar coin in lieu of the paper dollar would ultimately save money. The General Accounting Office’s (GAO) stated potential savings of up to $500 million in a report issued September 2002, which was calculated on the premise that the U.S.Government cease production of the paper one-dollar bill. However, the United States Dollar Coin Act of 1997, which authorizes the Golden Dollar, did not call for the elimination of the paper dollar. Consequently, dollar coins and dollar notes co-circulate in the marketplace. The United States Mint does not have the authority to change existing legislation thus, full cost savings cannot be realized."

The cost of ink alone is worthy of the change.

As for strippers, time to move to the $2 bill, as Bob and Tom suggested.

OK, to get you guys back on subject...

I'm with Seacrest, in that I pretty much get as many dollar coins as I like, just by going to the local PO to the stamp machine and sticking in a $20, and buying, say, a $2.40 book of stamps. I differ with Seacrest though in that I VASTLY prefer the coins over bills. Why? Because vending machines will almost always take the coins, whereas the bills are sometimes a problem. Also, the coins are just altogether more convenient (or at least they would be, if there were more in circulation). I do agree that there is a problem with the SBA dollar looking too much like the quarter, but they pretty much fixed that with the Sacagawea... I don't understand why they don't just reissue that, with a fixed alloy so that it doesn't tarnish. Very pretty coin, IMO.

Jeez, you go back a few decades and stuff was cheaper. A cup of coffee was 25 cents instead of $2.50. People were content to pay for joe with coins; there was no great clamor for a paper quarter.

And please, let's just get rid of the freaking penny already. They cost more than a penny to make. That's dumber than a dollar coin.

I can't help but laugh whenever the dollar coin comes up, and you hear the two most common complaints: They weigh too much! and They should be bigger! Sometimes it's one person expressing both sentiments.

And while we're on the subject, I'm glad the $2 bill is making such a strong comeback. I guess the exotic dance industry really can be good for society.
