That plus they needed to be able to conclusively identify his body using DNA. I think that was the most important factor, seems odd that someone who successfully hid this long would keep much sensitive data lying around the house where he lived, but maybe he did.

Those were released initially by journalists, not the gov't. And those journalists got them from soldiers who were snapping cell phone pics. I seriously doubt that any of the Seals are going to release photos of OBL.
Without the photos that were released, however, the US-sanctioned abuses going on in Iraq would likely have continued and those responsible would not have been brought to justice (of course the highest levels were not brought the justice, but that's for another thread.)
There is no benefit to releasing the OBL photos that I can see. I believe our national security officials when they say he's dead.

People who refuse to believe OBL is dead without photographic evidence. Would a long form death certificate do? Copy of the DNA test results? Time will tell. 8-)

Agree or disagree as to the value of releasing the photos, but don't pretend that it is an Obama-only decision. Other folks got to put in their two cents, and it might be that their two cents has more clout than that of anonymous internet forum users.
Republican House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said Wednesday that the Obama administration should not release the gruesome post-mortem images, saying it could complicate the job for American troops overseas. Rogers told CBS News he has seen a post-mortem photo.
"The risks of release outweigh the benefits," he said. "Conspiracy theorists around the world will just claim the photos are doctored anyway, and there is a real risk that releasing the photos will only serve to inflame public opinion in the Middle East."
"Imagine how the American people would react if Al Qaeda killed one of our troops or military leaders, and put photos of the body on the internet," Rogers continued. "Osama bin Laden is not a trophy - he is dead and let's now focus on continuing the fight until Al Qaida has been eliminated."
