A penny costing more than a penny to mint is a myth.
It's only been 2.5% copper and 97.5 zinc since 1982.
Copper plated so it looks like copper.
1962 to 1982: 95% copper 5% zinc.
Before 1962 mostly bronze and various combinations of tin and zinc.
Except 1943: zinc clad steel. With some rare solid copper ones made.
You have to have pennies from before 1837 to be all copper.
Solid copper pennies are only worth a penny when copper hits around $1000.00 a tonne.

In Mexico, they have had 10 and 20 peso coins for years, in addition to the bills. basically $1 and $2 coins. It has never caused me any problem having both, and the coins work just fine for me.
