Re: Haikuman - Philippines Updates - haikuman - 11-11-2013 And then there is this which is not what these poor souls need right now: http://www.pagasa.dost.gov.ph/ ![]() Re: Haikuman - Philippines Updates - A-Polly - 11-11-2013 Ombligo, those are great ideas and advice! Thanks for the link to the International Red Cross — I just made an online, targeted donation and can report the process was simple and quick. ![]() Those Lifestraws look really cool! I hadn't seen them before. Several years ago, when my kids and I were getting yellow fever shots for a trip, the public health nurse told us that a piece of old sari cloth folded to at least 4 thicknesses makes an effective water strainer. I thought she recommended silk, but the wiki says cotton: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloth_filter Re: Haikuman - Philippines Updates - ztirffritz - 11-11-2013 There are several options from the same company that makes the 'Lifestraw'. They have a LifeSaver Bottle, Gerry Can, and even a large scale filter system for a small village. The founder's TED talk was pretty convincing. In situations like this, he pointed out that the survivors often have most of what they need, just not in a form that they can use it. Water is abundant, but not clean water. Rather than waste space on airplanes dropping bottled water, drop LifeSaver water filters and allow more space for other supplies that are desperately needed. http://www.ted.com/talks/michael_pritchard_invents_a_water_filter.html Re: Haikuman - Philippines Updates - Lemon Drop - 11-11-2013 Great news for Rudie's family. Sending good wishes for health and safety to all in the Philippines, and to their loved ones waiting anxiously for news. And prayers to the many who are not getting good news. Good point A-Polly, if you want your contribution to be tax deductible it does have to be through a US-based charity. You can give aid directly to typhoon victims here if you want to go that route: https://www.redcross.org/donate/index.jsp?donateStep=2&itemId=prod4650031 Re: Haikuman - Philippines Updates - mrlynn - 11-11-2013 A-Polly wrote: I don't know if the Philippine Red Cross donations are tax-deductible or not, but I will include it in my tax deductions for this year nonetheless. We just list a total amount, and unless we're audited I don't expect anyone will ask which charities we contributed to. Here's the Philippine Red Cross link again: http://ushare.redcross.org.ph /Mr Lynn Re: Haikuman - Philippines Updates - kanesa - 11-11-2013 I am so glad things turned out well for your family. Now the hard work begins. Have your family's homes been destroyed? Where will they stay? Re: Haikuman - Philippines Updates - mikebw - 11-11-2013 Thank goodness they are OK. Re: Haikuman - Philippines Updates - robfilms - 11-11-2013 rudy- wonderful news you and yours are okay. wishing the same for so many others. sending out your way all our good thoughts. stay strong. be well. rob Re: Haikuman - Philippines Updates - haikuman - 11-11-2013 Thank you for your kind words and support, Lemon Drop, kanesa, mikebw, robfilms *(:>* Been reviewing a lot of stuff that I think they may need. We still have no direct lines of communication. I do not truly know the exact conditions of their current shelters. Reports about their homes and Apartment in Tacloban and Beta-og were not good. I do know Lilian's mother went on a tarp shopping trip to Tacloban before the Typhoon arrived and brought back tarps for their place in Beta-og, Lawaan. I also know she purchased extra food and water. Firstly I am sure they need sources of food and potable water. As people have mentioned municipal and government relief can take months. Roads are bad power lines and cellular towers are down. If the 3 pigs made it through the storm they have fresh meat as fish supplies may be limited. I know from my Hurricane experience in Hawaii (Hurricane Iniki was a Cat 4 Hurricane) and reading about Katrina relief and Sandy relief it is not going to be a picnic. Has anyone here had any experience with Berkey Water Filtration Systems. I am initially impressed with video and written information about them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFfLbeXDav8 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Iniki http://www.berkeyfilters.com/berkey-water-filters/systems/crown-berkey.html BTW it is 3:26 a.m. here and Lilian is sleeping like log again for a change. It will help having gone through something similar. Wishing you all the best. |
