My turn to visit an MBA! - RAMd®d - 10-26-2010

Went down to the St. James Apple Store to see the MBA there.

I went straight for the 11" model. (For me, if I'm going for the 13" screen, I'll get a MBP.) It was the 1.4GHz/2G model, which is probably the standard.

As others have said, this is a great, beautiful machine. I shut it down and restarted. From pushing the Power button to getting to the desktop was 15s. From sleeping the 'Book (by closing the lid) to waking it (by opening the lid) was 2s or slightly less.

Opening various apps took approximately 1s (Safari), 2s (forgot what apps) and about 5s or less, for bigger apps like MS apps, GarageBand, iPhoto, etc.

Instant, no. But it's pretty darn close.

Light and solid. I torqued it a bit to see if it would twist, and it didn't. The hinge is very smooth and as light as it is, lifting the lid up to about 45d did not lift the base off the table.

The screen is gorgeous. Graphics purists will probably not like the vibrant, saturated colors, but I did.

This is now on my list of Must Haves.

Don't be torquing the MBA! Big Grin

Nice to hear that it is that solid. I thought it would be, being a unibody and all, but I haven't actually seen one yet.

I too would go for the "little brother" version, if I were to buy one, but until the MacBook goes, I really can't justify it.

When I can't justify a purchase, I just rationalize!

St. James Apple store?

I went down to the St. James Apple Stor-or-y
To see my MBA there
she was laid out on the long white table,
So neat, so light so bare.

Buy me now, buy me now she told me
You know i'm the one for you
You will never ever regret it
And I'll always look like new

It's on my gotta have list, too. I'm still on the fence between the 11" and 13". The bigger one might be a better deal. For three hundred more you get faster, more battery life, bigger screen, double the amount of storage, and only 6oz more weight. But, the 11" feels so nice in your hands....

The Mactech review compared the 13" very favorably with the latest 13" MBP.

I made a pilgrimage to the Des Moines, IA Apple store today to do the same thing. I was instantly in love with the MBAs. I'd take either of them, but I like the idea of the SD card slot in the 13. My problem is that I have a perfectly good 3 year old MBP that I would need to sell. I guess I could buy new and sell the old later. I've been wanting to replace my G5 dual 2.5. Maybe the best replacement would be my MBP and I could take the MBA on the road with me. It weighs much less than I thought it would. It's an amazing piece of machinery. Add me to the list of those who are going to have to have one.

I use my iBook G4 laptop as my home computer, docked with a big screen, Matias keyboard, outboard hard drive, scanner, printers, etc. I expect to email, surf, and occasionally use Photoshop, PowerPoint (or Keynote), FreeHand, Illustrator, and InDesign. Would I be happy with this as a replacement?

Get one of these, run the MBP closed, and attach a large external monitor, which you already have at least one of from the G5 tower.
