New bed makes me more sleepy? - bryanus - 07-24-2007 So I had my current mattress for about 3 years. Then I started to notice I was having more and more shoulder and neck pain. I only spent about $500 at the time, which to me, seemed like a lot. So then decided to 'upgrade' over the July 4 sales at Macy's. I picked up a Sealy something-or-other with a plush pillowtop; never had a pillowtop before, and it felt super nice at the showrrom. It was about $750 for just the mattress with the sale (I have a platform frame; it "retailed" for something crazy like $1400, whatever that means). Anyway, I've been using it for a couple weeks now. But now I wake up much more tired than I used to on my old bed. I literally have bags under my eyes, and I never have bags under my eyes! I also have some crazy neck and shoulder ache, but it's a little different than with my old mattress. I also feel much, much more tired when I wake up, and this is after at least 8-8.5 hours of sleep! I think it's the pillowtop; I'm sinking into it a lot more, which initially feels pretty good, but maybe over the course of the night it's not a good thing? Maybe I should have opted for the 'plain' plush instead of the plush pillowtop? My girlfriend thinks I'm crazy, but I am considering sending it back and picking out another one. I don't think I can sleep on this for another 5-10years! What to do! Is this just a break-in period? BGnR Re: New bed makes me more sleepy? - AlphaDog - 07-24-2007 I seriously doubt it's the pillow top portion of the mattress that's to blame. Mattresses also come in a variety of "firmnesses" (there's a better word that I can't think of!) Perhaps the mattress itself is either too soft or too hard. I have an older model of the Sleep Number bed, without any numbers on the control. Overall, I sleep very well in it, but a couple of months ago I realized I was waking up in the morning with more aches and pains than usual. Over time, the amount of air in the mattress had diminished, and when I finally thought of plumping it up again, I immediately noticed an improvement. I didn't change the topper, which is a combo of foam and feathers. Given what you describe, I think it's more likely you need to change to a different mattress. I know that not everyone is wild about the Select Comfort type, but I do like the way I can change the amount of support so easily. I never could figure out how to judge how well I might sleep on a specific mattress by just laying on it for a few minutes in a store. BGnR That was the first thing I noticed about the TempurPedic matresses! I thought the pillowtop would be good because I tend to sleep on my sides more, and thought it would help 'align' my various parts if some could sink in more than others... Re: New bed makes me more sleepy? - RAMd®d - 07-24-2007 I seriously doubt it's the pillow top portion of the mattress that's to blame. I agree. If they were 6-10" deep, it *might* be a different story. The actual firmness of the mattress is more likely the culprit. It may seem as firm as your previous mattress (or more) but may be even less so, once you fall asleep on it. Crazy or not, try another. Oh, and you might try that with your mattress, too. Re: New bed makes me more sleepy? - bryanus - 07-24-2007 The weird thing is that with my old bed, I was constantly tossing and turning around during the night. With the new one, I'm definitely not tossing as much. Does that mean I'm getting a 'better' sleep? hence the bags under my eyes and feeling more tired? because I was in a deeper sleep state for longer? I think I'll probably try for a non-pillowtop, or see if i can test out the beds a little longer in the showroom. Thanks guys. Re: New bed makes me more sleepy? - BigGuynRusty - 07-24-2007 It is the PillowTop. Have a mattress that had a removable PillowTop, after a week of horrid sleepless nights I removed it, sleeping blissfully now. Sits in the closet in a big plastic bag. BGnR Re: New bed makes me more sleepy? - OWC Jamie - 07-24-2007 I swear the best "matress" I ever slept on was a 6" piece of foam like used in apholstering , while camping. So tired, probably could have slept on the floor. (and I've done that, too.) (just don't let the mice lick your toes.) Re: New bed makes me more sleepy? - simonm - 07-24-2007 Hmmm .... "bags under the eyes ..." 1. I have no idea what a pillow top is - never heard of one. I assume it means what it sounds like. 2. What it sounds to me like is that you may have either a mild allergy to the filling in the "pillow top" or that your eyes are being mildly irritated by dust. Both conditions would be more likely to result from feather or down fillng than with a hollow-fill. 3. Are you sneezing or coughing more than previously for no obvious reason? Check what it is made of. Regards. |
