Olive oil and dogs - graylocks - 07-30-2009 my dogs coat is very dull and dry. the olive oil was sitting on the kitchen counter when i was putting his food bowl together and i decided to add a little to his food. olive oil is good for humans. is it good for dogs? will it help his coat? he ate all his food, btw. he also likes broccoli. maybe i should have made him a salad. Re: Olive oil and dogs - Racer X - 07-30-2009 should be fine. Salmon oil is a common spritz for cat and dog food FWIW. I used it for years for my 2 cats. Did wonders for their skin and coats. They actually felt like mink fur coats, and Ozzie's dandruff was cut by about 2/3rds. Re: Olive oil and dogs - vicrock - 07-30-2009 Animal fat like bacon grease would be better - but olive oil is fine. Re: Olive oil and dogs - PeterB - 07-30-2009 Fish and vegetable oils are fine... try to stay away from the saturated fats, for the same reasons as humans: http://www.ehow.com/how_4424987_add-oil-dogs-diet.html Re: Olive oil and dogs - A-Polly - 07-30-2009 Racer, was this the sort of thing you used? http://www.amazon.com/Nutri-Vet-Alaska-Salmon-Cats-Ounce/dp/B000OV4VDM I'm interested--one of my cats is having skin and coat problems, too. Re: Olive oil and dogs - wurm - 07-30-2009 Honestly, I thought this thread was going to be about frying hot dogs in olive oil. Re: Olive oil and dogs - DRR - 07-30-2009 If you feed dry food (kibble), it's a good idea to supplement with omega3 and 6. I use fish oil from costco. It was about $20 for a 16 oz bottle. pump bottle, and 3 pumps twice a day. Sort of like gravy on their kibble. Took about a month to show results. They always licked their bowls clean. Just clean the bowls more often. Frequently it will also contain rosemary. That is to reduce spoilage of the oil over time. No downside from what I have been told for the salmon oil. Vet says it is great for both dogs and cats, coats and their skin. Came from these guys, and here is some info I even saw some at Costco last week. The Omega-3 oils in fish oil (EPA and DHA) are proven to reduce inflammation, and I take fish oil capsules for my worn out hip. It really does help. So if the animal is older, it may help some with joint issues as well. Re: Olive oil and dogs - kap - 07-30-2009 We have been adding a tea spoon of olive oil to our male terrier mutt's food for the 5 years we have him. His coat and skin looks fabulous! Olive oil is still oil so don't use too much or your pup will have love handle. Occasionally we would also spike their food with fish oil. |
