Specifically this equation

Seriously folks: here is the problem. When I pull that little knob on the diverter to send water to the shower, it makes a high pitch noise. Two years ago I replaced the diverter and the sound was gone, but it came back after about a year. here are my questions
What exactly makes that noise? I can't pinpoint where it is coming from, sometimes it seems to be the diverter, other times it seems like it's coming from inside the wall.
Why did it stop when I replaced the diverter? the old one looked bad, but did the job, i.e. stopped the water flow in the tub and all water went up to the shower.
Why did the sound return?
The sound is gone by itself within 30-60 seconds.
The sound also changes and sometimes goes away if I open and close the driverter. Or if I change the handheld shower from one mode to another. Or if I change the water temperature setting. Or sometimes it takes a combination of these. What exactly makes this sound?
