Macbook Pro won't boot
#11
Should have an HDMI out. Plug it into a TV for testing that way. You won't hear much of any activity as there is no optical drive and the storage is all SSD.

If you take the bottom off you can see if any of the fans spin when starting up. You could also try disconnecting the battery and holding down the power button to get rid of any power that might becausing a problem while the bottom is of.

Yes, knowing if the fans continue to spin is important. Have you tried to reflect a flashlight though the screen to see if there is the image of the boot disk?

I checked the fans and they do spin and continue to spin.

I tried the HDMI plug and voila the computer screen came right on (but not the tv screen). The Apple showed up and the progress bar went half way across the screen before it went black again. Repeated tries shows only a black screen. :-(

I tried the flashlight but saw nothing.

Thanks for all the help. Does this indicate what the problem might be?

Sounds like it might be the logic board/video chip.

You could likely recover her files using target disk mode:
