I'm happy to report that there never was a problem with the User folder as I originally thought.
When I imported 5600+ picture files from an external drive they apparently went astray and ended up in the User folder. The sheer size of the download obscured the "normal" contents until I slowly examined the User folder once again. I then discovered that I actually had all of the expected interior folders, i.e. Desktop, Applications, Documents, iPhoto Library, Library, Public etc.
I created a new "Pictures" folder and manually dragged all of the 5600+ picture files into it and now everything seems back to normal.
A few days ago a package came from OWC containing a 320GB Newertech miniStack and 2GB of ram for the Mini.
I immediately hooked up the miniStack and cloned the mini's drive onto it. It was instantly bootable. Beautiful!
Today I had the ram installed and rushed home to try it out. Booted to the miniStack and running 2GB of ram it seems much snappier and my S/O is a happy lady.
Thanks again to everyone who posted to my previous topic about my Mini's problems. At least there's now a happy ending.
