Do you ever "tip" the garbage collector?

We have this problem at Christmas. Short of standing watch there is no way to actually catch the gut to give him the gift. Same goes for the mailman. You may leave something in the box but your regular may not come that day.

The former owner of my house always slipped the collectors some extra "green" he was being billed for a micro can, and actually had the biggest one. Yet on my moving day, which was also trash day, the deal went away the instant they saw the moving van in the driveway. If they had just made some off-hand comment about, "Gee, your billing info says you have a micro can, but the can is full sized, so you are going to be undercharged undercharged...." I would have gladly tipped the guy for pointing out that mistake :-)

Well, I'm home today. When I hear them, I will go out and give them each a $20. I have no way of knowing whether or not is it the "regular" guys, since I am not usually home during the day.

When each child arrived I taped an envelope with cigars and a $20 to the can with a note saying "Thanks for the hard work ! It's a Boy (Girl) ! Warning ! Diapers to Follow ! "

Wow! You've got good garbage men.

The garbage men in my old neighborhood won't take more than 3 bags and refuse to take cardboard boxes on recycling day unless they've been cut into strips no more than 3 inches wide and 18-inches long and tied in stacks no more than 8 inches high with real twine (as opposed to nylon). Even with full-compliance, they sometimes wouldn't take cardboard unless I called their supervisor. And large items or furniture often ended up rejected and thrown on our lawn even if we called for a special pickup.

We had to hire a professional "remover" to get rid of the garbage when we moved.

One benefit of living in an apartment: I have direct access to a dumpster.

A nice bottle of Scotch / Brandy / Tequila is what I give my Sanitation Engineers whenever I need them to take something out of the ordinary...

OK. They were very happy to get a little cash.

They took another huge load today - including the shower doors.

Thanks for the input, everyone.
