back up photos while traveling
#1
is there a small simple light solution to backing up photos for my Canon dig? Perhaps a way to transfer from the cameras chip to an outboard drive of some kind?
Trying to avoid carrying a laptop.

I think there is a special hard drive case with built in memory card slots, look for DataBank (IIRC). Alternative, carry lost of memory cards and shoot one each day on a new card, if something goes wrong you lose one day, not the whole vacation.

Also, a few years ago Belkin had a similar device that downloaded memory cards to iPods.

photobank, not databank...

there are a few, and I think they are all battery powered, and some have screens for viewing as well.

I have occasionally uses a photo center in a big box store to burn a CD from my card. I think it was 3 bucks? I would highly recommend you get 2 copies and mail on to yourself or a trusted recipient. I would travel with some pre addressed CD mailers for that purpose.

I don't know it they would split a larger than a 512MB card over two or more disks?

For me my largest card is 8GB so this is now a moot point for me.

If you're going to end up spending a considerable amount on a transfer option, wouldn't it be just as reasonable to buy additional media cards and leave the photos on each card. Just how many pictures might you be taking? Several 4gb cards will hold a lot of pics.

Awhile back, I picked up one of these from CompUSA for $7.50:

Along with some cheap USB SD card readers and spare SD cards, it works well enough. Not speedy, and no picture preview, but it fulfills its purpose - it gives me a very portable way to backup my digital photos to another piece of media.

thanks for all suggestions ideas. I will probably buy extra flash, but I want a back up to the back up because of the borders I'll be crossing.
