but it didn't say what level of service, did it. Complete recovery vs spotty and slow?
Oops, it did "It wasn't until May 23rd that residents got local service back, while regional and long-distance phone service remained spotty at best for some time afterwards."

again. I was there. 'some time again...' that is not entirely forthright.
Might have been well reported, but the reporting was fed faulty info.

I think, considering the extent of the outage, it was pretty good that it only took them two weeks to restore service.

Yes, two weeks to restore a small but measurable percentage of their overall customers' service given a disaster that they showed no forethought in spending the money to prevent is noteworthy.
Legislation BECAUSE of their shortsightedness in this one catastrophe changed how all RBOCs had to design their network thereafter. Now we will not have to be thankful for any future grace (or luck).

Hmm . . . the article said that all of the service was restored after two weeks, not just a percentage. Maybe the article's inaccurate.

So, Mr, Fritz, did you solve the mystery?
Kind of odd to see what I guess is my "home town" in a forum subject line (I was two when we moved back to the city.)

yeah, the UPS that the router was plugged into died (catastrophic failure apparently) but there was no way for me to know that from 2000 miles away. I knew that it had to be a power issue, but I was helpless to do anything about it because it took down both lines. I had to call a colleague in to fix it after hours. I'm not sure how bad it is but I'm guessing that I'll need to at least order a new UPS in the morning.
