I grew up in the 50s and 60s and my father every Christmas would buy the family a board game. Many, many happy memories of playing proper board games with the family throughout the year, not just at Christmas, and my children were also brought up playing them. My girls are now both in their late 20s and every time they come home they ask to play a board game many of which are the ones from my childhood. By far the most popular is a game from the late 40s called 'Shipping'. It's quite a rarity but over the years I have managed to find two more copies so both my brothers can have one for their own families. It's one of those games that can last a long time, we played over Christmas and that one took just over four hours. We loved it.
